More about this scene
Much of Lancashire was affected by the Civil Wars, and Warrington, an important crossing on the Mersey and chosen by the Royalist, Lord Derby for his headquarters, saw considerable action. The Parliamentarians first took the town in 1643 and it was again the scene of fighting during the 1648 war, when Cromwell actually stayed here, his visit remembered in this statue.
