Gilbert Scott, my Father, And me 1915 to 1998
My dad was born 1915 and I was born 1947. At the age of seven he went blind so he went to Queen Victoria Blind School in Newcastle till he was 15 years old. When he came out he learned to play the accordion, he went round the clubs in the North East and played to people in the pubs and clubs. When he was 6 he went blackberry picking on the Glebe pit railway line with my aunt, there was a train coming and my aunt called out to him to tell him but he did not hear her, his hand was over the line getting blackberries and the train ran over his left hand, taking it off at the wrist. He played in the clubs till he took ill in 1996. We lived in Grassmere Terrace in my grandfather's house, Thomas William Scott. He died in 1964 so we lived there till I got married in 1968. We used to go down to Patterson Town and deliver papers. All my great-grandfathers lived down there, there were two streets and the canteen. All the houses had a back yard. In Brady Square we liked to go to Rutters shop when I was 12, he had everything in there, you could get anything for two pence to one shilling.

I remember Gillie well, being a mate of Eddie for several years, we had some good times on our Bonnevilles! Gillie was a great bloke who never seemed to let anything get him down and always seemed to be laughing, and he was brilliant on that accordion.

Hi Gilbert, I can remember your family well, especially Eddy, from my time at the Glebe Pit. I have a brother called Robert who lives down Hampshire now and has two children and five grand kids. I moved down to the Manchester area some eighteen years ago from Washington. My dad was a member of the Celtic and for many years would be remembered for his pigeons. I can recall Gillie well from the times in the Celtic and the Westwood and he could rattle some tunes off with his accordion, nothing seemed to phase him. Pass on my regards to Eddy tell him I am asking after him. Regards Jim
