1950's Waterfoot
My grandmother used to take me to Waterfoot every day from Warth bridge to get a daily comic. I can still recall the titles, Lion, Beano, Topper, Knockout, Eagle etc. I used to make a beeline for the toy shop at the top of the arcade. There was a fruit shop and the owner had two large Airedale dogs, well they looked old to a boy of under 5. There was Holts the butchers, and Savilles where I used to be fascinated by the machines making bread which you could see at the rear of the firms. Once a week a mobile RSPCA van used to park near the church. All happy childhood memories..
The Manning Family
I would just like to add my memories of the Manning family. As a child growing up on the Edgeside estate in Waterfoot I remember Michael Manning from the bakers, he was a lovely man always smiling, and his sister Maria ran the chip shop on Edgeside estate where we used to go quite often. I have fond memories of Edgeside Piercy School and the park, and my old mate Steven Crew - if anyone knows where he is these days I would like to know. On Sat afternoon we would go down to Kings Pictures at Waterfoot, I think it cost 2d, and get a bag of chips from the arcade chippy to eat on the way home.
Crane/Manning Family
My everlasting childhood memory of Waterfoot is visiting my Dads auntie Nellie (Ellen) and Uncle Guddy(George) Manning in Waterfoot. She made the most exquisite cakes and would always, at the shortest notice, put on a great spread for tea whenever we visited from Blackpool where her brother James (my Grandad moved to and where we still live) . It is no suprise to know that her husband and children went onto run Mannings bakeries in the area, and may still do I believe. I remember the steep road they lived on (I am trying to recollect the name) and Guddy sitting on the porch in his rocking chair and on Saturday afternoons him watching world of Sport wrestling on ITV with Big Daddy and Mick McManus.
Nellie's parents, my Great Grandparents who came over from Ireland,Hugh and Bridget Crane had 9 children, lived on Burnley Road and ran pubs in the area Boars Head Haslingden, Robin Hood Waterfoot and Well Street Working Mens Club.

Memories of Lancashire
Newchurch
I lived at on Staghills Road (my maiden name was Taylor) and I went to Newchurch C of E School until 1958. I remember Mrs Roberts and Mrs Barlow, the teachers in the top 2 classes. My favourite time at school was when we were allowed to go across to the field at playtime. Sadly the school was pulled down and replaced by a new one down Dark Lane.
Newchurch was a lovely village, then they went and pulled down the houses on one side of the street. I remember Rothwells Butchers, they made lovely potted meat (Ican still taste it!), Schofields had Home Farm, there was a chip shop, a grocers, a wool shop. The Post Office was further down the village, Joe Ainsworth ran it, I used to ride the pony that he owned. When they altered the village they took away a lot of its character. Fisher Hindle Hargreaves Family
Hi, I was trying to trace my family, the last known address I have for them was from the 1911 census which was Newchurch Road in 1936. The father James Fisher died, he was a signal man at one point, he was married to Esther Hindle, they had two children, Emily Fisher and James Fisher. Emily married James Hargreaves. Any info no matter how small would be great.
Stacksteads Glen Top - The Old Brewery.
I well remember the building in this photograph. I believe it was built as a brewery and in 1957 I remember working there, I was a joiner and was sent there at times to carry out joinery repairs etc. The firm I worked for at the time was J Greenhalgh of Rawtenstall. The brewery I recall was called Baxters, and was taken over a few years later by Beverly's beers, shortly after that it was demolished and can now be seen only as a large grass area.
Childhood on Osborne Terrace
In 1949 the houses on Osborne Terrace were just being built, as soon as they were coming available the council were moving people in, our family moved into no 21. I was 4 years old. It was a lovely place then, nice and quiet, not much in the way of traffic then. There were 4 chip shops on the main road, the only one that is left now used to be called Hartleys. There was a barber's shop called Fred Smith's, all the shops were occupied then, Webs cake shop, Gillibrands the chemist, 2 butchers, Co-Op, Barcrofs grocers was where the machine shop is now. Also Duckworths, where I worked when I was 16. As children we would play rounders etc on Osborne, you would hear the siren go off I think it was from Lee Quarry then we would know it was school time. 2 Breweries in The Glen, Stacksteads
I have walked past this brewery many times as a child and an adult, it felt spooky, a large dark stone building. But there was also another brewery on the opposite side of the road with a very big house in its own grounds that the owners lived in, unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the brewery, does anyone know?
