I lived in Complain from 1965(ish) until 1984. Can't ever remember a tea rooms at the top of Durley. There was a toy shop called Tumbers and a garage (Pegasus?), later the co-op, on the opposite corner where the motor bike shop is now.
The best shop was always Carters sweet shop, just along from Tumbers.
i rememeber there was a cafe down a bit further i think it might have been on the corner of latchmore forest grove, the building is now an office. there was a sign painted on the roof for years.
Thank you both for your comments. It's a strange story because about twenty years ago my mum and my nan were walking the length of Cowplain shops in the pouring rain. They stumbled across this cafe that they had never seen before and popped in to dry off and have a hot drink. My mum says they were welcomed by a rather plump lady who had a lovely smile. The cafe as my described it was friendly although a little old fashioned. The lady who served them kept her smile throughout their visit. A week later my mum and nan were shopping again this time no rain so they were less desperate to find shelter ... They decided to revisit the friendly cafe with the smiling lady only to find the cafe was no longer there. I am a believer in these kind of things and I really believe they stumbled upon a piece of the past in their desperate hour of need to get out of the rain. That's why I'm so interested to find out if this cafe ever existed... I have researched it on the internet but failed to find any info or pictures.
I lived in Durley Ave. (1970's) Tumbers was the electrical shop on the corner. I have asked a few very old residents of Cowplain with memories going back to the 1950's but none can remember a cafe..
If there had been one the top of Longwood Avenue would have been a good location but like I said nobody remember's one at all.
