When The Inferno Burnt Down
A Memory of Welling.
Girls cried when they saw the charred remains of the Inferno Club, a teenage venue held at the old British Legion hall in Station Approach. It had mysteriously caught fire around 3am on Sunday, September 18th, 1964. Many teenagers refused to believe the club had gone and some even returned from their holiday to see for themselves. Whatever adults thought of the club - local residents had often complained about the noise and drugs - teenagers were quick to spring to the venue's defence.as a place to meet up, listen to great music and dance. 'Now that it's gone,' said one girl at the time, 'there is nowhere in Welling to go. First the Odeon Cinema closed down, then the Embassy Ballroom, then St. Michael's Parish Hall and Loraine's Coffee Bar. No wonder kids go wild and wreck public places because whenever somewhere opens for them to go, someone always finds fault. The Inferno was a great place for us, and now it's burnt down. That's terrible.'
