Ryelands And Heronswood Secondary Modern
A Memory of Welwyn Garden City.
I remember coming to Ryelands in about 1955 or 6.It was a paradise for kids as only about half of was built and still some unfinished houses on Howlands.I knew Philip Young.and John Spong of Howlands,Illana and Philip Bouscilla,Caren White(first girlfriend),and several others. As far as I remember the farms had already been turned into the playing fields and Hyde House was still standing. After going to the Junior School off of Howlands,I went to Heronswood Secondary Modern, now gone thanks to the pressure of population needing housing. If anyone who attended there from !959 to 1964,or worked through the apprenticeship program at ICI until 1969 would like to get in touch please write through this site.

I recall some of those you named. Phillip Young lived next door to the Thorbys. He was a very keen cyclist. His father, Jimmy served in the Long Range Desert Corps in WW2. John Spong lived in the maisonettes opposite the alley from Ryelands to Howlands with his Mum. They moved to Heronswood Road in the late 60s.
John and Gillian Bloxham lived next door to us. The Newtons were at 342. They left for Australia in the 60s.
I will sort out some photos and memories to add.
