The twin towers have been an inspiring sporting symbol since the stadium was built in 1923 as part of the British Empire Exhibition. The approach from Wembley Park underground station, romantically named Olympic Way, has changed little in the years since the 1948 London Olympic Games, but in recent years the setting of the stadium from this viewpoint has been quite drastically remodelled. Was the money well spent? Well, maybe not, if the multi-million pound National Stadium rebuilding programme materialises within the foreseeable future.
