North Yorkshire memories
My great great grandparents arrived in Redmire in the 1840s or thereabouts.
This photo was taken in 1929 when my mother would have been about nine or ten. She was born in Redmire in 1921 to George and Ellenor Miller who had five more children William, Ethel, Lillian, John and Mary. The family were all stonemasons through the census years. My interest is in this photo. The girl with the longest hair resembles my eldest daughter. Can anyone name her or her family? I would be very grateful. I myself spent quite a few times up there in the summer holidays and stayed with my grandad and uncle John at the Railway Cottages where they lived. Has anyone got any old photos they could let me see, school ones maybe? The view from the Railway Cottages is breathtaking over the village. I love the place like a passion. I was up there last summer and it has not changed a bit from what I can remember. The Railway Cottages is now one house, there used to be two and there is not a way through the field now. There is a road up to the house. Thank you. Josephine.

Norman Barber - watchmaker and jeweller
The jaguar on the right belonged to Norman Barber and was parked outside his shop in Leyburn. At this time my husband, Cedric Barber, was probably in class at Leyburn County Primary School (now an old peoples' home). Cedric's second cousin, Janet Green, lives a short distance from the scene of this photograph.

North Yorkshire Living Memories
A herd of Shorthorn cattle is driven down the main street of West Witton, which stands at the eastern entrance to Wensleydale. West Witton lies in the shadow of Pen Hill on the southern side of the dale. In the distance on the extreme right we can just see the 16th-century tower of the parish church of St Bartholomew.

Richmond Photographic Memories
Some women artists paint the view of Richmond from across the River Swale. In the left distance can be seen smoke rising from the gasworks beside the falls. Richmond had one of the earliest gasworks in Europe, built in 1820 to provide street lighting for the fashionable Georgian town.

Richmond Photographic Memories
The Terrace, another Georgian promenade, offers a spectacular panorama of the town. On the right is St Mary’s parish church, in the centre the Grammar School, and to the left Church Mill, demolished in 1969, the last of many Richmond watermills once powered by the River Swale.
