Bombing of West Hendon
I remember when three streets were demolished by a huge mysterious bomb just after eight in the evening. At the time my mother was out on fire patrol and I was fast asleep in bed whilst my three brothers and sister were downstairs listening to the wireless. The tremendous blast rocked our house in Milton Road causing severe damage to our ceilings but luckily not much else. I was carried, fireman style, down the stairs by my brother and can still picture all the plaster littering the lino. We all went into our next door neighbour's home as no real damage had occurred there. What a relief for my mother when she came home to find that we were all safe.

RE: RE: Bombing of West Hendon
Hi Ann, I was so pleased to come across your memery of the bomb in West Hendon. I have been trying to find old maps of 11 Milton Road, as that is the house were my grandfather lived and were my father was born. His name was George Porter and he died when I was 5, I'm 50 now. So thank you so much for your information. Gill

RE: RE: Bombing of West Hendon
Thanks for this posting as it's the first time I've been able to pin down the time of the bombing. My dad's first wife, Mattie, and young son, Martin, were both killed in this raid. It's very odd to think that I would not be here otherwise so each year on Feb.13th I like to remember them. I only found out about it after my dad passed away in 1992, as he never spoke of it to me when he was alive - too painful and long buried a memory I suppose. Now when I remember them I can mark the time as well. Thanks again.
