Leybourne Grange Hospital
Does anyone have any memories of the Hospital Leybourne Grange in West Malling? I worked there from 1974 - 1976 as a pupil nurse and lived in the nurses home. I know the hospital closed years ago and is now a site for housing I believe. I would love to share your memories. Ann

RE: RE: Leybourne Grange Hospital
Hi Sharon Did you ever work there? As I said, I was a pupil nurse from 1974 - 1976. It was very different nursing there compared to general nursing. The shifts were 7am to 9pm, or 7am to 5.30pm with one half day finishing at 2.00pm. The residents lived in villas, 30 to 35 patients on one villa. Some went out to work in the laundrey, kitchens, stores or grounds. The children went to school in the hospital block from 9am to about 3.30pm. Once a year some of the patients went to Bexhill to a holiday camp which was very hard work although I never went. The staff were all very caring and could not do enough for the patients. The patients were very well looked after and many activities were held for them in the social club, and Christmas was made really special for them. The staff used to meet in the staff social club where drinks were very cheap. There was a band or disco held most Saturdays for the staff. I lived in Vine Hous,e the staff nurses home, which was strictly run by the Matron, who knew everything that went on. On my days off I would walk into West Malling and catch the bus or train to Maidstone and do some shopping. We were all very friendly in the nurses home and would gather in each other's room for the evening and cook for each other. Several times I have gone on the web sites and seen pictures of what the hospital was left like after it closed down, empty, dark and depressing, windows smashed and generally left derelict. I hope this helps you. Ann
