Post Office West Monkton
I lived here from around 1952 until the late 1960s with my parents RF and WM Marsh who ran the Post Office and Stores. My father used to deliver groceries to customers over quite a wide area, some of whom lived in Coombe (in another photo) and some lived across fields further into the hills where geese used to try to attack the car wheels! My father passed away at home in 1974 and my mother kept the shop going by herself (with helpers) until around 1977/8. I understand that it kept going until the Post Office cuts in 2008. Earlier there was a butchers shop further up the Street and possibly another shop of some sort.

RE: RE: Post Office West Monkton
Post Office at West Monkton:-
1881: George Parsons Snr aged 37 was a House Painter at Westmonkton with his wife and large family. His first son, George Jnr, was also a House Painter at the same address. No addresses were given on 1881 census but the 21 year old married Lucy Bobbett living alone in the next house on the census was a Grocer.
1891: The census now includes addresses and George Parsons Snr is now listed at “The Post Office and Grocers Shop” with occupation as House Painter and Sub-Postmaster. His wife is a Grocer and son, George Junior (my Grandfather) as a House Painter.
1901: George Parsons Jnr has now married Bessie Goodland and lives at Railway Cottage No. 1 as a Painter but his parents are still at the Post Office.
1911: I haven’t got the full census details but I can see that George Parsons Senior is still at the Post office and George Parsons Junior is at Taunton Road (could still be Railway Cottage)
George Parsons Senior died at Bathpool/West Monkton in 1926 and George Parsons Senior died in 1944.
I know this is a little before your family lived at the Post Office but I thought you might find it of interest. I am researching our family history and would be interested in any remaining Parsons, Goodlands you might have known. My email address is jane.chadwick@mac.com in case you would like to contact me.
Best Wishes
