17 Years at West Tilbury

My husband and I moved to a bungalow on the Muckingford Road, West Tilbury in 1972. It was bought from Mrs. Jones (wid). We kept various animals, ducks, geese, chickens, horses and pigeons. We lived there for 17 years when we sold so that we could start our own business.

Early Memories

I lived just outside the village in a small army camp as my father was in the army. My most vivid memory is standing in the lunch line at the junior school and hearing that King George VI had died. The whisper started at the front of the line and spread down to me almost the last. I also remember gleaning for potatoes . I went to Sunday school in the church and visited the library nearly every day. I was only there for a few months as my father was transferred during the time the school was an evacuation centre when the Thames flooded. As the school was closed I never said goodbye to my friends

I can remember taking the Lemonade bottles back to the little off licence part and getting the money back. I was probably about 9.

I remember walking through the square one day getting mum some shopping and I had a kilt on (God knows why) and it fell down to my feet! I have never pulled my skirt up so fast! I just hope everyone who saw it has a bad memory like me now ...

Merchant Navy Days

What a wonderful memory, going from Tilbury to Gravesend when I was on P&O 'Iberia' as a BRS, which was in the 1960s.

School Days

As far back that I can remember, it was the summer of 1934 when I first started school at St Mary's Roman Catholic School in Calcutta Road. I sat next to a friend that I had made (John Toole) Who later in life emigrated to Canada and was killed on a railway crossing in the early 50's. I recall the first bell that was sounded at school and we both thought it was time to go home which we did. However some 30 miniutes or so later we were marched back to school by our parents and given a polite telling off.
When the bell sounded it was time for play and not going home.
I can remember some of the Teachers names but they were mostly nuns and they lived at the Convent which was in the school grounds and also the church.
There was sister Margaret Mary, sister Borgia. sister Teresa sister Bernadette and the priest was father O'Donnel whom we all loved - he would visit us... Read more
