When we were children during WWII, my brothers Rob and Wilf and myself often visited Weston Green. At Weston Green there were two churches and two ponds called Marneys and Milburns. My brothers Rob, Wilf and I used to catch newts and skate on Marneys pond when it was frozen. There were also four pubs: The Albion, The Lamb and Star, The Cricketers and the Greyhound. I was born in 1950, christened at all saints church by the alma arms (now marneys) named after the marney family who had the house/timberyard were the beer garden now stands. my grandmother lived at maisonette, woodside avenue, and untill 1957 I lived at 9 jubilee villas, facing the cricket pitch, the photo is a scene familiar to me
I was born in Weston Green, my parents having lived at Maisonette, Weston Green. My grandfather Charles Dobson was the local baker and lived on the green in the house on its own called The Lodge which was where the cricket was played. I used to watch it from my grandmother's back yard. She had ducks and hens and used to hire out horses to people, but I was not born at that time, I only remember the ducks ...see more
