1960s Holidays
My mum and dad had their annual holidays in Weymouth in the late 1950s through to the middle 1960s. My dad worked at Vauxhall Motors in Luton but always went on the train as he did not own a car! My earlist memories of visiting Weymouth was of standing in the corridor of the steam train waiting to get the first glimpse of the sea.
We used to stay in a boarding house in Spa Road which was run by a Bert and Mary Pitman who called their house 'Bermar'. Mary and Bert became family friends and we always met up with another family that came from the Birmingham area. I cannont remember their surnames but they were called Ray and Joan and I remember playing with their son Jefferey. I would love to hear from them if they read this.

Childhood Memories
As a family we would holiday in Weymourth every year from about 1958-1963. We used to stay in a bed and breakfast owned by a Mrs Walkadine. As I was so young my memories revolve around the wonderful beach, the donkeys and egg sandwiches full of sand. I would love to visit the house we stayed in but my parents are both dead and I was too young to remember such things. Does anyone know of a way to find the address of the B & B by using their surname as it seems quite unusual? Is there a business directory for 1960 which might have them listed? I seem to remember it was a mother and daughter and the B & B was a Victorian terrace but it wasn't on a proper road and there were no houses opposite, only fields.
These were certainly some of the happiest days of my life.
The Wessex Folk Festival
Weymouth is the venue for the Wessex Folk Festival which this year attracted may Morris Sides from around England. We took turns to perform over the three day festival in June and most of the music and dancing was alongside the boats moored downstream from the bridge.
I brought my accordian and played in the Whitethorn Band. We had fine weather on the Saturday of the Festival and there were huge crowds gathered around to watch the women of Whitethorn Morris put on a display of north west clog morris dancing.
However on the Sunday all the performers had to contend with wind and rain which was unpleasant for the musicians and dangerous for the dancers as it made the road surface in Trinity Street slippery. This is a lively Folk Festival and our team of dancers and musicians will want to come again so lets hope the weather is a great deal kinder to us on our next visit to Weymouth!
My Memories of Weymouth
I enjoyed the photos of Weynmouth and other memories - I used to visit my aunt and uncle through the 1950s when they ran a hotel right on the quay called The Edward Hotel, now made into apartments I believe. It was right opposite the Alexandra Gardens Theatre and I enjoyed seeing so many summer shows and meeting many stage personalities - I still have two full autograph books to prove it and I am in my mid-seventies now and live on the other side of the world! They were great holidays never to be forgotten though. I made good friends there and still correspond with one who worked at the hotel which makes our friendship 65 years old next year! I have many friends still resident in Dorset and last visited in 2001.
Wedding Day
My parents were married in this church in June 1943. My father Ernest was in the Navy (based at Portland) and my mother Joan worked as a secretary at Tilleys Garage.
Weymouth - Chapelhay And The Corner of Buxton Road Bombsites
I was only small when we moved to Longfield Road but old enough to remember walking through the bombsites and noticing wallflowers, buddliea and butterflies among the heaps of rubble and being concerned when coming across a fireplace or something that looked like a part of someone`s house.
1962 Vacation - 1968
It was the year before I married that my husband to be and myself went on a vacation to Weymouth. We had a lovely time, the weather was just glorious for us. We always said that when we married we would revisit Weymouth. Well, we did in the year 1968 with our first born she was 4 years old at that time. I remember so well enjoying a day on the beach, and my little daughter had such fun watching Punch & Judy shows. I would like to visit Weymouth again one of these days to relive all those memories of bygone days.
The Floods
I have lived in Weymouth since 1947 when I was 2 years old. In July 1955 one of my brothers was born. This was about a week after a massive thunder storm causing a flood. The water at Westham bridge was a foot deep. It's good to to look at these photographs to see how things have changed.

My dad lived in Weymouth for several years. His father worked for a dairy and later ran a kind of dairy shop in the town. The family were based at Chickerell Road. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers him. gconnatty@gmail.com
First Visit to Weymouth 1948.
I first visited Weymouth in 1948 with my mother, father, brother Terry and sister Joan. We travelled down from Chesterfield in Derbyshire in dad's pre-war Morris 8 saloon, and camped at Waterside in Bowleaze Cove, which was then owned by Mr. A.H.Pheby.
We were amazed at our first view of Weymouth and Portland from the hill overlooking the town, and we all came to love the place so much that we all continued to visit for many years afterwards. I have brought my children and grandchildren here many times, sometimes twice in a year, and will be coming again this year (2008) in my 70th year, 60 years after the first visit!
We particularly enjoyed the Jazz in June concert in 1995 when our two eldest grandchildren, then aged 5, started jiving to the big band.
Weymouth is truly a wonderful place, with a great maritime history, and still seems to have a unique atmosphere of its own.
Memories of Dorset
Wyke Regis
My wife Christina Armstrong's (nee Brown) mum Phylis was born and raised in Wyke Regis, both of Phylis's parents along with many of her relatives are buried at this church. Chris's mum was raised at Park Mead Road, her name was Phylis Davie. Phylis's mum Kathleen was a Tizard. Phylis had two sisters, Kathleen and Agnes, two brothers, Bill and Frank. Phylis moved out of Wyke to live in Liverpool, her sister and brothers remained in Wyke. Chris often visited Wyke as a young girl, she has fond memeries of Wyke and all the beach walks.
West Bay House
I was born here in 1949 but moved away when about 4-5 years old, so my memories are not too vivid! But I do remember playing on the Chesil beach and the smell and sounds of the sea are forever with me. I have been in Argentina now for many years but would dearly love to hear from anyone who knows/knew of West Bay House. A rumour came my way that it is now part of a caravan site... !Unfortunately there is no longer anyone in my UK family to ask about it.
Milk Bar South St
I used the milk bar regularly in 1964.
I think who owned it then was named Evans.
They had a daughter named Carol ,any idea what happened to her ?
Fond Memories
My family moved to Eastbrook House in 1970 and lived there for about 11 years, I was ages 1-11 at that time so my first memories and experiences were of Eastbrook, Upwey, Dorchester and Weymouth in that order. I drive through Upwey whenever I can on nostalgia trips and always stop outside Eastbrook to reminisce and to see what changes are going on. My wife thinks I'm obsessed with Upwey and especially Eastbrook! Maybe she's right.
Windsbatch Cottage, Church Street
We moved to Upwey when I was about 3. My father came to Portland in the Royal Navy and I went to Upwey Primary, sang in the choir, went on to appear in local pantos and generally have a wonderful childhood, playing in the Mill with Lorraine Milligan, the miller's daugher, and buying bits for Mummy from Eckersalls, Loverings and Upwey Post Office - all sadly now gone. We had to move in 1980 when my father left home but my heart is in the village and always will be. I am only over the hill in Dorchester. I think we had some of the best neighbours ever, and were so very lucky and safe, with amazing walks, ponies and a really special time. I feel very lucky indeed to have met some of the nicest and kindest people of my entire life in that village.
