Seedhill Cottage

The house in the foreground is known as Seedhill Cottage.  My family lived there from the mid sixties to late seventies. My father was the gamekeeper for the local shoot and water baliff for Whitewell area. My mother was the school cook at Dunsop Bridge. My sister and brother attended school in Dunsop. The family moved to Hellifield when the shoot... [more]

Lancashire memories

Clitheroe and Trough of Bowland

My father, Ken Hatton, worked as a surveyor with Cementation, a civil engineering company from Bentley Nr. Doncaster. They were driving a water tunnel under the Trough of Bowland. At that time we lived in Clitheroe at 12 Windsor Avenue off Henthorn Road. I remember going down Low Moor to a beauty spot known locally as "little Blackpool" on the River... [more]

Happy Memories of Slaidburn

My first introduction to Slaidburn was in the middle of the very cold and snowy winter of 1949-50. I had just driven down from Inverness to this charming Lancashire village with my Dad. It had been a long, cold drive in a 1938 Morris roadster car, loaded with luggage and a big tool box. I was to begin a new job... [more]

the old house

This is a picture of the house I lived in as a 8year old boy, I used to catch trout and eels by hand in the stream/creek. It was called the old mill house, to the left was the old bobbin mill. The driveway was directly opposite to the Bayley Arms.

Morris Dancing with the Clitheroe Morris Men

This was a weekend to remember!

The Clitheroe Morris Men invited several other dance "sides" to join them for a weekend of dancing, music and - of course - beer drinking! By a lucky chance I was included in this invitation due to a strange set of circumstances...

Just the Autumn before, in 1979, I had... [more]

Paddling pool, Castle field

I remember this pool vividly! One day I was riding my tricyle round the outside of the pool, which wasn't filled with water at the time. Unfortunately I happened to fall in and I cut my hand on a broken glass. After 34 years I still have a scar to prove it.

Summer Holidays

I remember in the 1950s my sister Annette and I used to spend some time on a farm owned by Mr Thomas Holgate who was a friend of the family and really enjoyed those times. The farm was called Townley House and my dad used to help with the hay making. I also used to go there occasionally to do jobs... [more]

Schoolboy memories

Born at the Risedale Maternity Home in 1933 we first lived in James Street. I think it was 1937 when we moved to Clevelands Avenue in the new Beacon Hill estate. Barrow was bombed in May 1941 but it was the older part of the town that suffered the most damage. I recall, as a boy, going... [more]

Lancashire - A Second Selection Photographic Memories

The point from which this photograph was taken, Seed Hill, was at that time in Yorkshire, but looks over the border, defined here by the Hodder, across a corner of Lancashire. The hills at the back are Mellor Knott and, to the left, Totridge Fell, along which the old border looped, climbing from the river to follow the watershed.

Heart of Lancashire Photographic Memories

When our photograph was taken, Whitewell really was just a small and remote community. Being so near the old Roman road from Manchester to York, and being so well-placed on many routes, it has always had a reputation for putting up visitors and travellers. There was once a royal hunting forest next to Whitewell, and that brought in the aristocracy of... [more]
