Childhood

Shops, High Street 1962

I spent many happy days in Willington with my grandparents Billy and Hilda Davison who lived in Brown Avenue. I can remember my grandad taking me to the park on the estate and going on summer trips with the working mens club. I was absoluetly gutted when, after 20 years away i returned for my grans funeral to see Brown Ave and the rest of the estate had been demolished and felt that part of my childhood had gone.

RE: RE: Childhood

If I remember rightly, your gran and grandad lived in 41, Brown Avenue. My parents and my siblings and I live in 39. Mam, dad, Mary, Beryl, Leslie myself, Freda and Aileen Hill. Mrs. Brown lived in 38 and I believe Mr. and Mrs. Hatton lived between your gran's home and ours. I too was astounded to see the changes that have been made since my dad left the estate. The council have torn the heart out of Willington, they even changed the Miners Welfare Hall into a sports and leisure centre, not that I'm against change, but it's not the same now.
