RE: RE: 699 Green Lanes
The timber yard was called Tripps. One of the owners sons (Mickey) went to Wood Green School at the same time I was there.

RE: RE: 699 Green Lanes
Yes, Steve Salvary is right in recalling the name of the timber yard next to the police station as being Tripps; at least so when I lived at 72 Compton Road Winchmore Hill from shortly after being born in 1944, until January 1956, when I was 11. Because of adverse family circumstances (my father deserted us for a wartime German floozie) my late brother and I had to go away to a boarding school from the age of 5, so we were not at home for periods other than school holidays. As my grandparents with whom we lived, died in early 1956, I was then obliged to become relocated at Ilford, Essex, where I never again felt happy. Winchmore Hill has always very much signified "home" to me, and my memories and associations with it are sacrosanct.
Many of my memories centre around Grovelands Park and the "village" part of Winchmore Hill, but include the Broadway, Barrowell Green baths, and Palmers Green. With our house in Compton Road being so close to the railway, the trains which were all 100\% steam in those days (and nights - many lengthy goods trains, that sent us off rythmically to sleep) were another source of fascination - which continues with me to this very day!
What price nostalgia!
