Cinema
I was born in Palmers Green in Jan 1940 and lived at 18 Farndale Ave. from 1948-1960. I went to Winchmore Hill Secondary Modern from 1951-1953. I remember the Capitol Cinema and the Saturday morning film club which was a part of most kids' lives at the time. It was either the Capitol or the Palmadium depending what was on. Sometimes there would be the usual Cowboy and Indian stuff or films about German spies, which would fire up the blood so that when we all piled out at the end we would run round the corner, over the new river bridge on Fords Grove and into the small woodland at the back of the Capitol where we would split into warring factions and recreate what we had just seen on screen. If it was summer and hot we would take swimming gear and go to the pool in Barrowell Green before going home in the afternoon. Those WERE the days. Does anybody remember the fish and chip shop on the corner of Cedars Road and Highfield Road? If we went to the cinema in the evening we would stop there on the way back for six penn'orth of chips. Also my mate Dave Bambury lived in the house next to it so we would scrounge a cup of tea.

RE: RE: Cinema
Hello Richard, Well, I'm a new 'blogger' here, about 4 years junior to you, born in Sept 1944. We (my mother, late brother and I) lived at Compton Road, Winchmore Hill, adjacent to the railway. I strongly recall the 'Capitol' cinema and us 3 going there for a treat (it really was in those austere days). Probably a bit tame by modern kids' standards but we enjoyed it. Also VERY dear memories of Barrowell Green Lido - who cared about being 'closed in' or 'heated', no wonder kids today are so namby-pamby! Alas I don't recall the chippy you speak of at Cedars/Highfield Road as our route bypassed it. That was the summer of 1952. I never went to Barrowell Green after my dear 2-years-older brother very suddenly died in late November that year (1952) from an aggressive and fast-acting 'mystery' viral infection at our boarding school near Reading. I left Winchmore Hill in New Year 1956 to go to Ilford, Essex, but have long since relocated here to rural North Essex. I'd love to go back, but....sadly the world's changed completely and utterly since then. Best regards, Bob H.

I remember the chip shop in Highfield Road, it was owned by the Cappleman family. The sons went on to open The Trawlerman near The Green Dragon. I spent many summers at Barrowell Green Baths. I was in the cubs and scouts opposite where you lived Robert. The 163A troop. I now live in Hemel Hempstead, I was out at Newport, Essex last week. You really ought to re-visit. The lovely Grovelands Park is still there and The Green retains a lot of its charm. Best wishes, Rick
