CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

I was born and bred in Wingate 1953, I was born in a flat in North Road East just down from the Co-op. My dad worked underground in various collieries throughout his working life from the age of 14 until he reluctantly retired at the age of 65. We moved into our first council house when I was 4 years of age in 1957, no. 7 Williamson Square, way back then the houses had no bathrooms and the loos were outside, but it was heaven to my parents. I can remember clawing my way in the dark to the gloomy loo, so scary in the dark when you're only 4. I can remember just about everything from being aged 4, and have watched with interest the regrowth of the village,"out with the old and in with the new". Lots of the old building have long gone...along with the residents, there are so many strangers in the village now, I'm not sure if all of the changes have made the village better or worse! But it's where my roots used to be for all of my growing up years. I remember using a shovel to sit on and slide down the pit heaps in the snow. Making dolly wash balls out of the coal slag when the pits were on strike. New Year's Eve was always a memorable event, the pit buzzers used to ring in the new year, everyone were all in the same boat way back then ....nobody used to bother locking their doors as nobody had anything worth stealing. but as I recall people were happier then, the kids played hop scotch and allies, skips, block and follow the arrow. We never thought about beating up anyone, we had little money but still knew how to enjoy ourselves. I had a great childhood, pictures fade but our memories last forever.

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Did you possibly know any of the Tarren family in Wingate? My dad was Bill Tarren?

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Hiya all, especially Dave & Marian, It was great to hear your memories of the old days. Personally I think Wingate was a nicer place to be all those years ago, more shops, 2 cinemas, Doggarts Co op stores, etc. I too remember the outside loos in New Cross Row where I lived after moving there from Rodridge Street, Station Town, then Vicarage Estate. How good it was growing up and my school days at the Modern school were great. David, you were of course Head Boy, our last year at school with 14 of us in the class were happy days with many laughs along the way, do you remember the school panto of Snow White? The funny school assemblies we had sometimes were brill, the school camps and boating lake facility we were lucky enough to have. Our teachers were great. I returned to Wingate 25 years ago and still love the village and work in our old school. I probably last saw you at the Half Moon years ago but am glad to hear you still visit Wingate now and then. Hope you get to read this, take care Pauline Dixon, nee Coulson

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Gosh what time was it when u wrote this? N how much wine? Something never change, u can take the girl out of Wingate but you.........well u know the rest. Pleased u can remember all the dogs in the street except mentioning our Shandy. The McHales used to live a few doors from us the Mrs Proudlock, school teacher, bought it when they moved to Kings Road. Remember the Dowsons, Gwyneth n her brother, Wests, Steven Mason n Marie. Our outside toilet or did we have an indoor one by the time u came along? Robbie Greaves, the milkman, on his 'chariot' the fruit n veg wagon or the co op store van.
Own goal, remember Jeff Lamb being in goal n knocking 1 past him, oops. Sure I was a good, no, great footballer! Well in my memory anyway. Great times n love meeting up with folks again. Flew into Luton to meet Cummy at West Ham for the last game of the season. Just a few hours with him but worth the hundreds it cost me. Looking forward to 18th June, to meet them all again at the Consys, Mam n Dads old place, still love it, as it brings back so many pleasant memories!

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Hi Dave, Thanks for the reply, I do get to visit Wingate quite a lot, I live at Blackhall Rocks, as you say it's rather like stepping back in time returning to Wingate, some things never change. I know Jeff very well, we grew up together in the same street, Williamson Square, we are the same age too, I'm 57, will be 58 in April. I lived out of the area for 14 years, I married into the service way of living, Ian my late husband was a cop in the R.A.F so we got to move around quite a lot...probably more than nomads do lol, but I loved the life, sadly Ian suffered a massive heart attack 24 years ago and passed away at the age of 35. He was a great guy and we were very happy, it was rather a difficult period for me and my two young children...at the time, but we got there in the end. Sorry to hear about your parents, mine too I'm afraid!

I have a son aged 35, Brian, he has done extremely well for himself, he's a world-wide senior project manager for Seimens, he's rather lucky, gets to visit lots of fab locations such as Mumbai in India, Dubai, China, and more recently Brazil to name a few. The company make blast furnaces and Brian has full control of the cost side of things, I'm afraid dealing with so much money would rather make me very nervous to say the least...but Brian takes it all in his stride, he lives in Hartlepool with his partner and two children aged 3 and 16 months. My daughter Amanda is 32, has 3 kids and lives in South Hetton.

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Yeah, Dorothy Harrison lived next door, number 48, and had twins, Philip and Steven, then a daughter Kay. They were related to us as my mam was a Harrison before she got married. My older sister Trish was 60 this year, then there is our Janette and Susan, 52 and 51. Mam died back in 1998 and Dad early this year. I followed in their profession after starting working life as a cost accountant taking my first pub on in 1979. We moved to the Half Moon in 1986 and sold that in 2000. We still have a house in Easington Village down where the garden centre used to be. I married Pauline Sargant from Peterlee and have one son Jamie, 33, who lives in Harpenden and works for De Beers in the City. I was back 6 weeks ago and met up with Jeff Cummins for a drink in The Crossings and then The Top House, it was like stepping back in time and brought some great memories back. My son and I always try and visit Mam and Dad's grave whenever we are up there and will do so again this Christmas. Where are you living now and do you ever get back to Wingate?

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

O.M.G David, I remember you well, although I think I may be a couple of years your senior, I remember you dating Lynne Race when we were at school, your mum was a fantastic lady, Margaret? I remember her so well. My mum was a great friend of Dorothy Harrison who lived I think two doors from you. I heard you were running the Half Moon pub at Easington for a while, I guess you must have inherited the pub business from your mum and dad, they ran the club for a while didn't they? I'm so out of touch these days as I lived out of the area for 14 years. I hope you and your family are well, it was so nice to hear from you...take care, live life to the full, enjoy Spain. I lived in Gibraltar for 3 glorious years. Kind regards, Marion Spencer (Wilkes)

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

I was born in North Road Eeast as well, number 47, in June 1954. I do seem to remember that one or two of the houses had been 'split' into flats. The one I have fond memories of is the downstairs of number 45 where Frank Harrison used to live, it was an end terrace one. I lived in Wingate until 1977, then Peterlee, Ferryhill, Easington Village and now Spain.

RE: RE: CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Spending every weekend with my Gran and Grandad, Fred and Annie Taylor, who lived in Forster Square. Getting up on a Sunday morning and going to the paper shop with Grandad, for papers and sweets (quarter of black bullets and mintolas!). My Mum ran the youth club in Wingate for quite a few years.
