Fir Tree Inn
I remember the Fir Tree Inn in its hey day. My Aunty Peggy was the landlady; she was a wonderful person; she always wore spectacular dresses when behind the bar.
The Inn was at the top of the village just where Wellfield Road began.
Sadly Aunt Peggy and Uncle Dick are with us no more but memory is a marvellous thing, a part of me will always remember the atmosphere behind the bar even though I was(technically) too young to work there.

RE: RE: Fir Tree Inn
Hi
I also remember going to see Uncla Dick and Aunty Peggy at The Fir Tree. I can remember our Janice singing and old Joe on the piano. This was the last pub they had before they retired to live in Newton Aycliffe.
I was in the Fir Tree not so long ago and what a big change to the place.
I now live in Yorkshire ( 30yrs ) but still go home to Wingate.

ALWAYS GOOD TO READ ABOUT THAT WINGATE LANDMARK 'THE FIR TREE'. I LIVED IN WELLFIELD RD 60 YEARS AGO [BEAT THAT SOMEONE]. THE RAILWAY'S GONE. THE DAIRY'S GONE. AJ DAWSONS GONE, NIMMOS GONE, DOGGARTS GONE BUT ISN'T IT GREAT THE FIR TREE IS STILL THERE. I MAKE MY NOSTALGIC TRIP TO ENGLAND QUITE OFTEN AND WINGATE IS ALWAYS ON THE AGENDA. ALL THE BEST FROM TASMANIA REGARDS GREGOR SKINNER.

My very first watering hole. I used to go there with my dad Richard Roberts even though I was too young, haha. My last New Years in England was spent in The Fir Tree before my family moved to Canada in May 1981. We had our going away party there too.
