Personal Recollections

From age 11 to 16 I lived in Station Town from 1950 to 1955, at 2 Rodridge Street,( now thankfully the street has been demolished). When I saw the old photograph of the Main Street it was mostly as I remembered it.  Booth's the Paper Shop was where I had my first Sunday paper job, deliveriing to the Main street, Sinker's Row and eventually finishing with the Pit Manager's House. All for 2/6.  The shop almost opposite Booth's was to feature stongly in our adolescence, it was the Ice Cream Shop, owned and run by Luigi Pirelli. Another prominent place of our attention was further up the Street, The Billiard Room, run by Jack and owned by Domenico's.  I remember an occasion when my Mother, exasperated no doubt by my inattention to schoolwork knocked at the door and demanded I come home.  With the money being won these days, she would probably be telling me to practice more.  I later found work at the Palace Cinema as a young Projectionist with Eric Smith and Walter Gibbons.  I worked there until I joined the Navy.  I have visited the village on a few occasions and have always been saddened by the run-down appearance of the place.  It seems that little attention has been paid to it since the early 60's.  It doesn't seem to matter how old you get, the memories of your childhood, the places and the people you knew, are always kept fondly in your mind.

RE: RE: Personal Recollections

I have very vague memories of Station Town and Wingate, I was born there in 1953, but we left after my grandparents Henry and Ellen Holcroft passed away. The main connection here is that my father, George Holcroft was born in 2 Rodridge St., May 1915.

RE: RE: Personal Recollections

I have a lovely feeling when I remember Station Town, it was where me and my twin sister Susan grew up. We lived in Milbank Terrace with my mam Glady and my dad Jack Thirlaway. We went to Station Town School, and then on to Wingate Modern. Happy days. Every night spent in John's ice cream cafe like most kids. Then as we grew up, Thursday night at the Concys, Sunday night in the Workmans Club. We had such good times with friends, my best friend was Mary Bell, as far as I know she still lives there. Then we both moved to the Midlands, I got married and had our kids and now our grandchildren. Happy Days.

I also like you was born in Wingate in 1940 aand lived there till 1962 when I moved to the Midlands as the pit closed. I remember going to John's cafe with Denis Magee, JohnTaylor, Jack Ward, Nora Bryson, Harry Hitch, Stevie Spowatt, Peter Brown, and Ann Jeffries who was my wife's best friend, she worked in Mervyn Hodgen's electric shop, we used to go and get records for Johnnie's juke box. Another friend was Eddie Taylor from Deaf Hill and my best friend was Butch Rowell from Shotton, we rode our m/bikes, also JimmyUnsworth, also Stan Forman. Most of these people I've not seen for over 50 years, I know a few are no longer with us sadly. Chris Tarren
