The Tillson's Home
A copy of the church photo was sent to me after I visited Witherley, on the trail of my Tillson ancestors. I was told that the middle house was where the Tillson's lived in the 1900s & before.
My g/grandmother Ann Tillson was born in Witherley in 1856, I have her birth cert. but wondered if she was christened in St. Peters. Her father William Tillson according to the 1861 census was also born there in approx 1832.
As I live in Wales is there anyone who could look at the Parish Records for me.
William was a Domestic Servant, Gardener & by 1871 a Coachman. Did he work at the Hall??
Memories of Warwickshire
Growing up in A Small Village
My parents moved to Twycross from London in the early 1960s. We lived on Sheepy Road next door to Mr Charlie Brooks and Louie Jones. On the opposite side were Stan and Ilma Jones and Len Gibbs and his daughter Joan. I remember there being a family whose surname was Talbot in the big house opposite us, but they moved away and a family called Turner moved in. We went to school in Congerstone, followed by Market Bosworth High then Desford. We stood next to the Green to catch the bus for all 3 schools. I babysat for a family called Dodds who lived at Seale Cottage and we played with the girls who lived at The Hollies, Mandy and Debbie Thorpe. Mr Brooks had a huge vegetable garden and we were lucky enough to be given fresh peas, beans and gooseberries from time to time. When he died, I remember a motorbike rider moved in, I think his name was Dennis Ireland. As far as I can tell, our old... Read more
Childhood Memories of Twycross
I remember moving to Twycross with Mum and Dad (Leslie and Louie Jones) and it was in the middle of the war. Dad had to go into the RAF and I remember going to Atherstone Station to meet him one day when he came home on leave. He was in the RAF for about two years he then returned and went to work back at Measham Colliery.
My Grandma Frances Jones lived opposite with my Grandad James Jones and sometimes we would sit outside at night watching the aeroplanes going over and when they were bombing. I may have been a few years older when I can remember them bombing Coventry and we could see the sky lit up. One of the main things at the end of the war was the convoy of tanks and lorries which belonged to the Americans and they were going home and came through Twycross with a lot of noise, but all the soldiers were waving to us.
I remember my first day... Read more
Netherley House, Hinckley Road
Hi Can anyone help me? Was there a Netherley House in Hinckley Road in the late 1930s/early 1940s? I have a relative who was born there in November 1940 but I cant see any record of the place. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Tracey
School Run
I lived up at the Three Pots on the A5, just opposite the pub of that name, me and my mum and dad had just moved there from Wellesborough near Sibson when I started at Burbage infant church school in 1955. On my first day at school, around November time, it was really cold with deep snow and me and my mum walked up to catch the H21 at the bus stop up by the Co-op at the top of Wolvey Road. My feet got so cold and wet as I only had ordinary school shoes on, she had to take me back home again to warm me up and put me in some dry socks and wellingtons, I think I got to school about an hour late, on my first day as well. I still remember the headmistress Miss Wheelock who lived down Wesley Walk, a vision of a village headmistress she was, and a kind nice lady as I remember. My next school when I... Read more
Earl Shilton Bakery in The 1930s?
Does anyone know anything about a bakery in Earl Shilton around the time of 1930? My husband's family apparently lived and worked there and I'd love to find out more about it.
