Pitch Place House
Hi, does anyone have any photos or info on the very grand, old, large manor house in Worplesdon, in the 1920's era or earlier? I believe it was the home of Lord and Lady Dewvine (not sure that is the correct spelling). My grandfather was their chauffeur for many years and lived in the tied cottage called The Bothy, as did my father, as a small boy. When he married and I was born, we also lived there for a while, and indeed I can remember going to the 'grand house'. Other than that, I have not much else to go on. Dad's now died and my mother is going to go into a carehome that has been built on the site of the aforementioned manor house - so I would like to know more history. I do know that the house suffered considerable damage from an arson attack in recent years, before being demolished. But that's really all I know, and I would love to know more. So does... Read more
Gamekeeper's Cottage
I do not know Compton but lived as a child next door to a lady who was daughter of the local gamekeeper. Her maiden name was Churchill, Hilda Churchill, with two sisters Mabel and Alice. I have a watercolour painting of her house at Compton done by H J Sage (a local artist) and would be happy to share this with anyone who may be interested. Also amongst her posessions was a Coronation mug for George V, 1911. She told me that one of these mugs was given to each child in the school and that after they were made, the mould was destroyed. I have this mug and it has her name written on its base.
I would love to know more about her family in such an idyllic house, standing in a field surrounded by a picket fence. I have known this painting for 60 years and have always admired it. I would also like to know if any more of the Coronation mugs exist.
My Memories of Compton
My name is Mark Goddard, I lived in Compton for 18 years. I was born in 1966 and I am now 43 years old. All my childhood memories are of my time growing up in this fantastic village. I was lucky enough to attend Compton School, being taught by some very strict but fair teachers who shall stay in my memories for life, until its sad closure. I will always remember the last day of school, all the tears and sad goodbyes, saying goodbye to Mrs Mcalmont and Mrs Gardener. Looking back for the last time as I walked home up the little path towards Almsgate.
We lived in Fowlers Croft for many years, in a corner house looking over the fields up to Watts Cemetery. I'm not sure what the houses were originaly built for but they were pretty cold in the winter but it was home. Compton is surrounded by some of the best countryside, great for walking, as a child we used to go on great walks... Read more
My Great Grandfather
The man in this photograph is quite possibly my Great-Grandfather. The family name is 'Wye' and he was the lock keeper at St. Catherines lock during the late 1800's early 1900's the family lived in the lock keepers cottage on the River Wey, where they ran a little tuck shop on the river bank. He also operated a punt (known as the St. Catherines ferry) to take people across the river to the golden sands at St. Catherines hill. My Grandmother Ada Reffold (nee) Wye was married in St. Nicolas Church , Guildford to Henry Reffold in the 1920's and taken by punt down the River Wey in her wedding dress from the cottage to the church for the service.
Bluebells And Carols
I lived in Guildford as a child, and every spring my father used to take me to St Martha's to pick bluebells in the woods at the foot of the hill. It was a sheet of blue, and however many we picked it looked the same.
In the 1940s I attended the Girls Grammar School in Guildford (opposite the Royal Surrey County Hospital). I sang in the main choir and in the "small" choir. With the latter I went to St Martha's every Christmas to sing carols. It was a cold walk to the top of the hill, and pretty chilly in the church as well.
