The Good Old Days
I was an only child and I lived in various addresses in Woodford Green and Woodford Bridge. My first address was in a flat above a Doctors surgery in High Rd, Woodford Bridge and my last address was in Crownhill Road, Woodford Bridge. I went to Ray Lodge School, then Roding Lane Junior School and then St Barnabas Girls school, which half way through changed to a mixed school (much to my utter joy!!)
I left school at 16 and went straight into a job in the west end for Rentokil (Advice Centre). I remember the tube journey with much affection. Squashed together like sardines, having your bum pinched often and just very frantic. I thought nothing of it at 16, now at 50, it would fill me with dread!
I now live in Torquay, Devon , and have done for the last 33yrs, and I still call Woodford "My Roots". It still is home to me, and always will be.
My mum was brought up in Chigwell and my father, Woodford Green.
I wish I could turn back time!!!

RE: RE: The Good Old Days
I was born in Wanstead and lived in Woodford Green till I married. I have lovely memories of the area and often go back when visiting friends in South Woodford. I remember my first work experience job at Keymarkets in Woodford Bridge, I loved it. I also recall sitting on the green looking at the duck pond after my dad had just had his false teeth fitted, and we had to wait to see if he could manage with them for half an hour before going home, so we sat on the green. I went to St. Barnabas Secondary School and I lived in the same road, which was Mallards Road, it only had about 6 houses down there at that time, and I think I left in 1967, the school was still split then. I always remember walking along the corridor at the school, past the classrooms that were cookery rooms, and at the end were a couple of steps that led up to the boys' part which was woodwork, I don't think we were allowed that far, but some of us took a peak! I live down in Kent now, by the sea, but my home is always Woodford. I just wonder if anyone remembers me, I was Rita Sharp and as I said, I lived opposite the school, which had its advantages and disadvantages too.

RE: RE: The Good Old Days
Hi folks, My memories go back to the 1940/50s. I was born in Highfield Road, in 1938 the youngest of a large family. I went to Ray Lodge School, then Roding Lane School (when the Canadians had finished with it as a fire station), from then up to St Barnabas. I had a paper round at the newsagents. My round consisted of going up to Claybury Hospital, on a tradesman's bike loaded with stacks of papers. It was so heavy you had to push the bike up the long, dark drive to the kitchen. I then free rode back down the hill to Dr. Barnardo's home where I delivered to all the houses. I also had a Round delivering the EXPRESS AND INDEPENDANT on a Friday evening up Ray Lodge road and along the Chigwell Road. I helped out at the dairy in Roding Lane. our round was with "MOLLY" and old "GINGER the cart house would help pull the cart up Millmans hill. He would then trot back and go to the dairy. I still have family in the area, even though I moved in 1958 for National Service, then left the area altogether in 1964. The memories of all my friends will always stay with me.
