I Really Hope Someone Can Help me .

My mum apparently worked in a cafe in Woolwich during 1955/56, it may have been near the market. I really need to know about all the cafes that were there at that time, who owned them? And does anyone remember the following names from then: Sid (cafe owner. Jeff, who sold things on the market. A man that had one leg, a tall handsome man called John (he may have been of mixed race such as half Cypriot?). Any information, no matter how small, will be very helpful. Thankyou, from Linda

RE: RE: I Really Hope Someone Can Help me .

Hello Linda, I remember two cafes near Woolwich market - one was near or next to the Pie and Eel shop and of course the famous Lyons tea rooms which was situated on the corner of Powis Street on the right hand side. I was only ten in 1956 and can only remember certain things unfortunately. Maybe the covered market (as it was called) in Plumstead High Street had a cafe, my mum always looked around in there on Saturdays. This building was on the left just before you would turn left to the open market. I hope you find what you are looking for, it's so hard when there's no-one left to ask. I will give this more thought and let you know if I remember any more details - don't be afraid to ask me anything else, I will help if I can. Regards, Jean

My father had a small cafe in Greens End on the corner where there is now an open space opposite the Wimpy, Barclays Bank and I think a FAD's decorating store. If I remember correctly next door was a stationers one side and the other side was an off licence that had hundreds of miniature bottles of spirits in the window. His name was Heorge Raymond Davies and he said there was a woman and another chap working there with him, I think he bought the place when he came out of the navy in the late 1940s or early 1950s. As I was only born in 1955 this was before my time and now my mum and dad are gone so I can't ask them, but my sister is a fair bit older than me so I will pick her brains. Hope this is useful, don't hesitate to contact me if I can help further. All my best, David

Hi Linda , I used to deliver veg in the 1950s to a small cafe in Beresford Street, just round the corner from the open market, roughly opposite where the old Empire Theatre was. As I remember the name was The New Adventure.
