Worcester Park From The Bridge

From The Bridge c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I lived in Worcester Park from when I was born (1939) until early 1956 when I joined the RAF as an apprentice. The lad in the picture (W455012) could so easily have been me (it isn't) because I was often there looking in the model shop window, as he is. Memories of Keil Kraft and Jetex and balsa wood and plastic cement.....
The picture is actually taken from the lower slopes of the ramp leading up to the station, on the left. The road dropped down behind the camera to the right, under the railway bridge which was too low to accommodate ordinary double-deckers. In the shopping parade in the distance can be seen the shop of Elliot & James, where my father bought my first bicycle, a Hercules Tourist Kestrel. A small green is on the right with the Huntsman's Hall pub just beyond. Past that was a petrol station and Toni's ice-cream parlour. Happy days!

RE: RE: Worcester Park From The Bridge

From Brian -
I too remember the buses. In 1955 I had been married two years. That was in St Philip's Church at the top of the hill.
The double decker bus was I think a 127. The upper deck had a lowered floor on the near side so we had to step up to sit down! The other routes up and down Central Road were the 213 and 245.

RE: RE: Worcester Park From The Bridge

I lived in Green Lane, first road on the left in the picture. I can remember the road being lowered under the bridge and railings put along the pavement. I used to cycle under the bridge every school day to go to school in the Avenue, until the school burnt down! (Not guilty).

I remember also the Odeon closing down and seeing my first supermarket and the shopping trolleys, but I don't remember my mother or I ever shopping in there. Instead, we remained loyal to the individual trades people.

Green Lane used to be a quiet road, with Lime trees opposite our house, until they got Dutch Elm disease. I visited the road some 15 years ago and was shocked to find the road lined with cars. So very different.

My mother moved to Green Lane with my grandparents. She has often told of the houses being flattened in the roads behind, and how the glass in the windows of our house were blown out. They were sheltering under the dining table so were unhurt. Our house was of a tudor style (no.52) and it still had its original leaded windows in the front, but plain casement in the back.
