Technical High School 1956 59

A Memory of Worcester.

These were good years amongst good people,although my memories of the school itself are rather mixed. I'm sure there are those out there who could add to my reminiscences.

Some of the teachers at the time were 'Taffy' Elkins,? Stezaker, Fred Bushell, Les Cole, Geoff Billingham, 'Jock' Anderson and Sam Bottomley who used to bring his cello and recordings of Kathleen Ferrier to keep us amused - and contained- during music lessons. All members of staff had their idiosyncrasies which were made much of by the pupils.

I remember the weekly trek down to Hounds Lane -what a palatial building it is now- for woodwork, metalwork and brickwork lessons. I recall being astounded at the remarkable results achieved by so many of my classmates, whilst I just generated piles of wood shavings, metal filings and brick mortar! I was very much the square peg in a round hole!

I also remember the winter cross country runs along the canal and past Gorse Hill School, cracking the ice on puddles as we ran and our breath clouding before us. The valiant stars of these occasions were almost exclusively Robin Cox and Terry Rivers, whilst some of us less motivated individuals waited under the first canal bridge to tag on to the tail end as the runners returned!

In retrospect, I find it rather amusing that our school song - 'Forty Years On'-replicated that of Harrow, a top public school! There, needless to say, the similarity ends!

My contemporaries then are too many to mention, but here are a few I recall: Allan Kyte, Terry Bowdler, Chris Busby, Geoff Webb,Dave Rastall, Mike Rastall, Len Palfrey, Dave Lee, Freddy Bluck, Geoff Clements, Chris Clements, Mike and Basil Bruton, Laurence Tipping,Roger Morgan, Mike Wilsmore,Alan Cappel, Geoff Birch, Dave Gerrard, John McGorrigan, 'Jazz' Jones, 'Scratch' Richings, Gordon Jackson, Jack Rogers, 'Lagger' Lane, and so the list goes on...Happy days!
