In 1960, when I was 6, we moved into Longhalves, a detached house on the left of Hook Hill going up, and just on the brow of the hill. My aunt and uncle ran the New Inn in the 1930s and 1940s, possibly before.

My late mother told me that she was related to Miss White, daughter of the Rev. Richard Walton White. His daughter left the manor and or land to Captain Macpherson in 1911. Yarmouth Pier opened in 1876, and was built out of wood, a common material for the less elaborate piers. Ferries used to call, but from the 1930s they moved to a nearby slipway - the ferry to Lymington can be seen in the photograph.
