School Years

I also remember my first day at Ynysboeth Infants school, and unceremoniously being dragged there by my mother for the first time, because I didn't want to go to school. However, as I was happily greeted by the teacher on entering the classroom for the first time, I also saw this wonderful huge rocking horse directly in front of me with one seat fixed at the front, and the other at the back of the horse. What I loved most at that very tender age was making animals out of the plasticine, especially elephants. Even to this day I can still smell that plasticine. But there was a smell I hated, which was having to drink from the small bottles of milk after they were heated on the radiators in the classroom during the winter months.
I also, like you John Williams, went up to the junior school, and then on to Abertaf Senior School. I left Wales when I was 17 years old when I joined Her Majesty's Service,... Read more

Happy Memories From Avondale Street

I am currently writing up my memories and will add shortly.

Memories of The Boeth

I was born in the hospital in Mountain Ash in 1937, and lived until I was 21 at 20 Main Road, Ynysboeth, together with my 4 sisters (Betty - Gwyneth - Marian and Ellen). I went to school, firstly at the Infants School, and then the Junior School in Ynysboeth. After that I went to school in Abertaf. My earliest memory of school was a large rocking horse in the schoolroom, and laying down on rush mats for our sleep time. The headmaster at the time was Mr. Hughes (I think). I remember the Americans coming down the valley in their tanks and lorries and parking in the park in Abercynon. We talk about snow nowadays but I remember the snow in 1947, we didn't go to school for about 5/6 weeks, we as kids had a great time, although the traffic wasn't around as it was now. And yes, I can remember Davies's farm off Avondale Street long before A.B.Metal - Sages - and the Carpet Factory were built.... Read more

Griffiths Family

My great grandfather Evan Griffiths lived at 54 Kennard Street, Ynysboeth. He died on March 26th 1905 aged 47 years and is buried in Mountain Ash Cemetry. He was married to Elizabeth Griffiths who emigrated to Australia about 1915 with her family. She died 26 October 1944 in Sydney. Their children were John, Mary, Thomas and Tilly (all deceased), Edward, Phoebe, Henry and Albert. Their daughter Phoebe (my grandmother) stayed behind in Wales and died at the age of 54. I emigrated to Australia in 1982 and have had no luck in tracing the Griffiths family. Does anyone remember the Griffiths family in Ynysboeth or better still, are there any relatives still living there?

Land Occupation Prior to The Construction of AB Metal Products Ltd

I was born at 86 Avondale Street, Ynysboeth, in 1936, and my memories of growing up in this close knit community are very vivid indeed. The land prior to the construction of AB metal products and the carpet factory was meadow pasture farmland used for grazing cattle owned by Mr. Davis whose farmhouse was situated in AvondaleStreet, Ynysboeth, the entrance of which was down the lane opposite the shop owned by Miss Francis Brake at that time.

I believe the building construction of AB Metals began in 1946-47 just after World War 2 when I was about 10 years old. I remember together with other boys from the village playing games on the footings of the foundations, before the erection and completion of the factory estate.

Back at the farm the cows were milked daily in the farmyard, and fresh milk was distributed on a daily basis throughout Ynysboeth and other nearby locations by horse and cart, and served by Berwyn, Mr. Davis's eldest son. In later years... Read more

Boxing

When I was a young lad my father Gwilym Jones and Joe Collins of Avondale Street (Joe was during the war the army lightweight boxing champion of India) opened up a boxing club in the Ynysboeth Hotel. We had a full size boxing ring on the top floor of the Hotel. Many of us lads from the village became club members, and as we progressed with our boxing skills we travelled and fought at many boxing clubs, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Bristol to name just a few. Some of the club members were Eddie Summerill (lived on Main Road), Graham Poole (Nant-Y-Fedw), Maldwyn Dower (Avondale Street) and many others.
