Barnard Castle had a fulling mill by 1316, which suggests that there was a local cloth industry, and there were three corn mills operating in the 1390s. In the late 1820s the town had a diverse industrial base: there was nail making, tanning, rope making, a dyeworks, five carpet factories, a paper mill, thread mills, and two worsted mills.

George Parkinson and his wife, Ann (nee Bowron) married:13.5.1845 at Rokeby Parish Church. After living and working at Balder Mill, just outside Cotherstone, the family moved to live at Desmesne Mill around 1853/4.
