More about this scene

The small 7th-century church of St John the Evangelist is one of the finest examples of early Christian architecture in the North. Built largely from stone salvaged from the abandoned Roman fort at Binchester, St John's lay semi-derelict in the 1870s; it might well have been allowed to fall into complete ruin, had it not been for the Reverend R E Hooppell. It was he who recognised St John's importance and launched an appeal to save it. The long nave and narrow chancel are typical of Northumbrian ecclesiastical architecture. Later additions include a 12th-century porch and 13th- and 19th-century windows.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I remember the ghastly school lunches - watery mince or graveyard stew as it ...see more

I used to go to school in Rushyford (Windlesone Hall) and we used to go to Bishop Auckland every other week. I remember there used to be some green cabins in the market place that used to sell burgers and the like, and a department store - I think it was called Doggarts. Correct me if I am wrong. We used to go there to eat... the best years of my life.
