For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

As a school girl (50+years ago!) when this beautiful old building was as you say, a book shop, it had a toy department on the top floor set up for the Christmas period. I was one of the Saturaday girls who worked over the Christmas holiday in the department. It was a lovely place to work, and a very happy time.
This picture brought back memories of the Regaters that were an annual event, and the Lairs on the Orwell .We lived in Kings Way my father worked at Mann Egertons on the Electric House top of LLoyds Ave.
Opposite the beehive, the white-fronted shop was Saronis Photographers and I can remember a chap that used to stand in the doorway dressed somedays as an army officer, other times as a cowboy. He went to court once for impersonating an officer. If my memory serves me right, the Beehive band drummer lived in Cobbold Street and wore blue tinted glasses.
I remember spending many an hour in the museum. I recall there was a stuffed rhinoceros just inside the front door, always looked as if he was charging at you. My parents ran the sweet shop/newsagent/card shop (Wilcox) just down the road from the museum and across the other side of the traffic lights. There used be a pub on the corner that was pulled down and the butcher shop - Graves? - was extended.
The man standing on the left of this photograph, leaning on the rail, is my grandfather, William Gilbert.
I was wondering if any one could tell me where the American Base is? I know its roughly about twenty miles away from Ipswich. The Salvation Army in Ipswich would be given Clothing from the base (Army or Air force) of which I'd buy and wear; they were comfortable and at the same time hard wearing. I often wondered if the base still is in existence? I really liked wearing those clothes; also the proper Denim Jeans?
