The Magistrates' Court (centre left) was built in 1930 as a police station. An earlier police station had stood in the same position. The war memorial, on the other hand, occupies the site of a horse-trough and a urinal.

Does anyone remember the petrol station being built on the corner of Mill Road where it joins Purfleet Road around 1969/1970. An Esso station now I think, but then it was ABCO - (with a big orange and black triangular logo) I worked for Alan Pond Group at the time. I was born in Central Avenue, opposite Lil and Derek Ward. Born in 1962. The good old days is what I call it, as they were. My dad worked at the Thames Board mill factory, and my mum worked as a cleaner in Love Lane School then went to clean the juniors school down by the village. My brother worked on Knight's farm.
