The Seamans' Hospital At Tilbury

A Memory of Tilbury.

I was a trainee nurse at the Tilbury and Orsett hospitals from 1962-1968. A lot of the parties I heard of were either for the Medical staff or invites from the ships senior mess. I remember keeping a window open in the nurses home for those girls who were invited. The doors of the hospital were right next to the gates of the Dock and we often saw the immigration ships loading passengers for Australia and New Zealand. At the time I worked there, it was a surgical unit and our surgeons were from the London Hospital. The ships bell from the destroyer HMS Essex hung in the corridor - I often wonder what happened to the bell when they pulled down the hospital. The wards all had tiled walls with plaques showing which ship had donated the money for that bed, this would also be interesting to know if there is any record of these ships. I would like to hear from any other old staff and also any follow up on my queries. My maiden name was Ann Jean Parrott and I was known as Nurse Polly

I was at Tilbury Hospital , 67,68 69 . I worked mainly at Orsett hospital but was often sent over to Tilbury Theatres to help Fred out .Fred Baxter was the theatre attendant there. A very knowledgeable man who taught me a lot . I remember Singhanee ward and a couple of others whose names I hope to remember soon! Passmore Edwards ? The nurses I remember where Noreen Sweeney ,Pearl North and Gill Dacey . I dont doubt there were others ,but nearly 50 years later they are the only names I remember . I recall helping with a Christmas Show in 1967, or was it '68 . Organised by Les Cope the charge nurse who ran the Special Clinic . The surgical registrar ,Adrian Naftalin contributed a monologue to the show , something about a huge inguinal hernia . All a long time ago now ! bob patterson
I remember Singhanee ward fondly did my first set of nights after Pt1/2 exams. I also remember Noreen Sweeney. While on nights stayed in the annex nursing accommodation (shared a room with fellow class mate Margaret Morgan) and could see who was coming from and going to the Special Clinic Loved my time at Tilbury.
