Caption For Hartley, The Village C1950

Next door are the twin half-timbered gables in the antique style of the Fairby Stores and Post Office and, beyond, a lofty weatherboarded barn. In 1895 the population was small - only 272.

Caption For Capel, Aldhurst Farm 1906

The majestic elms in the background were lost in the 1930s, and the barn on the left was removed in 1987, while the hovel in between was painstakingly removed and re-erected in its entirety in Leigh.

Caption For Wyddial, Village 1923

Sad to say, the fine thatched house and barn have not survived; only the row of Rose Cottages stand today as a reminder of the tiny village of Wyddial.

Caption For Bashall Eaves, The Village C1955

Here we have another view of the village, with its cottages and barns built in its local sandstone.

Caption For Burnley, Manchester Road 1952

Beyond the Midland Bank other businesses included Shee & Kennedy's, Burnley's principal tailors, the Café Royal and Restaurant, and Kate Barnes, which was well known for its ladies' gowns.

Caption For Cosby, Croft Road From The Nook C1965

In the background is a substantial brick and timber framed barn dated 1766 - this is the date of the brickwork, the timbering being considerably older.

Caption For Ruislip, Bury Street C1955

Caption For Chelmsford, High Street 1895

The tenements could only expand lengthways along their own ‘backsides’, and most buildings had a jumble of outhouses, barns and sheds at the rear.

Caption For Luton, The Brewery Tap 2005

It stood next to a tithe barn until shops were built to meet the town's changing requirements.

Caption For Great Linford, Black Horse Bridge C1965

At the end of the meeting, with handshakes all round, John Barnes, the young engineer, had secured agreement from all the local worthies - and finance from the Marquis of Buckingham himself - to

Caption For Clacton On Sea, Pier Avenue 1921

Frederick Barnes of Ipswich was appointed architect and it was hoped to open the new hotel, to be called the Royal Hotel, in time for the 1872 season.

Caption For Hemel Hempstead, Box Moor 2005

The deed was witnessed by Francis Combe of The Bury and Richard Gawton, the Vicar of St Mary's. The moor was administered by twelve feoffees (trustees).
