More about this scene

Overlooked by the cathedral, New Road is one of the most attractive grounds in the country. There has been a county side since 1847 but the present club dates from 1865. First class county status was achieved in 1899, even though the county ground was simply three hay fields, rented from the Dean and Chapter of the cathedral.

My dad was friendly with Sid Styler, the groundsman at the time. Dad arranged for Sid to get me a cricket bat signed by the visiting Aussie team that year, as a 10th birthday present.Seem to remember names such as ...see more
Spent the summer of 1983 working as a temporary groundsman at Worcester Cricket Ground New Road in Worcester. I was waiting to join the Royal Air Force so was extremely fit. I got a lovely tan met some of the famous cricketers of the day and managed to save a descent sum of money in the process. It was all thanks to my Mum who was an accountant in the promotions department and who sadly died six years later. I enjoyed the time there and it will always be a treasured memory.
