YMCA Agricultural Training Centre Ham Green Pill
In February 1949, my husband Derek travelled from London to start agricultural training at the YMCA Agricultural Training Centre at Ham Green, Pill, on a scheme known as 'British Boys for British Farms'. He arrived at Temple Meads Station, and caught a small train which in those days ran from Bristol to Portishead. Although born in London, he hated the idea... [more]

My family owned the house that can be seen on the right hand side of the photo. You can just see the building on the side which was the shop from which the family butchers, Howes & Son, was run. I'm not sure how many generations of the Howes family lived in the house but I know that both my grandfather... [more]

I was born at 5 Rosemount Terrace, Hotwells, no longer there. I remember Harry Eavans, the paper shop, all the shops. The oub, the spring gardens, the flying fox. Oh happy days. Clifton National School, that was many years ago. I am 82 years old. My name was Pat Smith, now Pat Blake. I wish I could find a DVD of... [more]

I never thought that I would see this building, then an office for the civil service, returned to be residential! I believe the family who once ran this hotel now live in Exeter. If they read this I would love to hear their stories.

I used to teach at Elmlea from the mid 1970s to 1984 and have a photo I took from virtually the same viewpoint in 1976 - in colour! A group of about 8 of us -teachers, classroom assistants and secretary from that era (Mr Hills was the Head) still meet twice a year and remember our days working there very fondly.... [more]

LAMB & FLAG AT CRIBBS CAUSEWAY
Does anyone have any photos of the Lamb & Flag during the 1950s or 60s? Or the surrounding area, i.e. the red brick cottages close by at Cribbs Causeway?

Around 1960-ish, a bus load of us kids went to the cinema in Canford Lane. We queued to see 'Summer Holiday' with Cliff Richard. The cinema has long gone.
I've been trying to remember the name of the cinema. It was similar looking to the Whiteladies cinema. There's shops in place of it now.

The magnificent St Mary Redcliffe owes much to the generosity of William Canynge the elder (died 1396), and his grandson William Canynge the younger (1394?-1474). In front of the high altar is a brass to John Brooke and his wife Johanna. She was the daughter of Richard Amerycke, collector for Customs and patron of John Cabot. So just who was America named after?

The west towers shortly after they had been completed. The Bristol dioceses was created by Henry VIII in 1542, and comprised eighteen parishes within the city boundaries, fourteen others in Gloucestershire, and Abbots Leigh in Somerset. It was refounded by Pope Paul IV in 1557.

Bristol cathedral has two Lady Chapels. The Elder Lady Chapel was built by Abbot David around 1210-1215, and was restored in the 1890s. Originally, it was detached from the main building, but was incorporated at some time between 1298 and 1363 when the choir was reconstructed.
