London Road School Burgess Hill
A Memory of Burgess Hill.
I attended London Road school from 1956-1962. I can remember Mr Smith and the after school stamp club, also Miss Brown, Miss Holloway, Miss Oakley, and Mrs Parrot . When I was in Miss Browns class, some of the other children were, Marilyn Harrop, Leslie Rogers, Sheila Ashdown, Pauline Morgan, (her dad owned Morgans, the local coal merchants,) the twins David and Barry Williams, John Stratton, Michael Cole, and Lester Backshall! I lived at The Gattons. At the bottom of the road lived Paul Brindley, and John, Chris and Dave Carr.
I think I can remember having a savings book, and buying a sixpenny stamp each week in school .I played netball, always centre as I was short. (still am!)
I can remember the "nit nurse" and queuing up for medicals and inoculations!
Mr Baird was headmaster at the time, and I still remember the song he taught us when we left! I can also remember going to his office to read to him to assess our reading age for our school reports.
We used to play in "the bricky" an area of land between The Gattons , West Street, and Fairfield Road. I was also friends with Patsy Wooden , she lived at 11 The Gattons
.
