Eddisbury Hall And The Hermans

A Memory of Eddisbury Hall.

Looking through a box of memorabilia recently I was reminded of my childhood during the war when we were evacuated to Macclesfield. I googled Eddisbury Hall and was surprised and delighted to read the reminiscences of “eddisbury”.
My father, Eric Roberts, was the London Agent for Barracks Fabricks before the war and knew Pete Hermon well. In 1941 we moved to Macclesfield and my father became a Manager at the mill. I was often taken to Eddisbury Hall to play with Judy who was a little younger than me. I can remember the nursery and all the people mentioned. I remember Mrs Herman very well. She and my mother often had tea together. I used to dance to the records played on their radiogram. My brother Alan sometimes played on the set of drums that were kept under the stairs. My father was very close to Pete Herman and went salmon fishing with him. We,also, had gifts of salmon and silk lengths at Christmas. My mother made her underwear out of the ofcuts of parachute silk.
In 1945, when the war ended, my father returned to London to manage the office in Argyle Street, next door to the Palladium. He became a Director of the company and made many trips to Paris and Italy with Pete Herman. He had daily contact with Macclesfield. My father was very upset when Mr Herman died in 1953. He thought the world of him.
I stayed at Eddisbury Hall when I was older and slept in the “blue room” with lovely views. I have often wondered what happened to Judy as sadly we lost contact. I am glad that her son Mark responded recently. Please feel free to contact me.
