Oh Beggar It, I Got Old.

A Memory of Failsworth.

Living in Glenmore Drive in the early 60's, it was a new house. I still get aches from the amount of time I spent bent over my bike in the ginnel.
From Stansfield Rd. primary and at Kaskenmoor in the first year it opened.
First time I ever ate peanut paste was in the tea rooms at Crime lake.
Won a goldfish at the fair at Daisy Nook, got home and my Mum pointed out we had nothing to put it in.
Playing war games in the old Mersey mill.
Saturday matinees at the Roxy, with Lurch policing tickets.
Sunday at the Macedonia church, slipping out just before the plate was passed so I could buy a packet of crisps from the off licence at the Willow Tavern.

Only just found this site! Very much the same memories as mine, lived on Glenmore Drive from 1963 went to Stansfield Rd except it was my brother Graham that went to Kaskenmoor the first year it opened and my mum worked in Red house kitchen. I went to Kaskenmoor 5 years later. Our garden backed on to the canal so used to play there and on what we called the compound. I remember there was something wrong with the heating at the annexe at Stansfield Road so had to go to Mersey Mill for lessons in what used to be the creche where the workers children used to go to. Although later on I also remember exploring the almost derelict mill. I remember there being a fire there and people having melted burnt smelling radios salvaged from the fire !
So you were on the other side of the road from us, and I remember the compound. Had some fibre cement garages on it I think? Now here's a weird one for you, I now live in Melbourne, VIC, Australia, emigrated to Perth WA in 1971 and got sent to Melbourne when I joined the RAAF in 1982. Every morning a small group of of us meet for coffee, one of the stalwarts being John Burrows.
Hi
Not related to John Burrows my name was Whittle. I lived at 97 Glenmore. I married Roy Burrows who lived across the road from me at number 80. He went to Failsworth school after Stansfield Road. I liked Stansfield Rd can't say the same about Kaskenmoor. There was a lively teacher tgere called Mr Barlow. Think he was head of red house. He was the only nice teacher I remember !
My niece has recently emigrated to Baldivis in Perth loves life there.
I lived there from 1963 until 1981
You must be the same age as my brother. I have to say
If you lived on the other side then I remember Barry Rowlings. Gary Brown Ruth and Pete Beswick and Duncan McNichols
On the same side as us was Clive, David Gubbins and the Copeland
family. I'm only in touch with Duncan's sister. The Beswicks mum still lives there !
Our John is 5th generation Australian born, but interesting coincidence I thought. I was one of Mr. Barlow's I think and I sort of remember the Copelands. We were at 24. The young lad next door (22) was killed up on Cutler's hill by a drunk driver, about 69/70. My Mum lives up in Merriwa, we originally lived in Padbury when it was new and considered a far outer suburb and Baldavis was bushland.
You must have a great life in Australia. Very different from here! My niece said its winter now but is still not as cold in Perth as it is in England , she described it as more like a fresh Autumn day . You're family made a good call moving to Australia !!!
Oh and Daisy Nook fair is still going strong although I haven't been for about 30 years !!!
