More about this scene

The pub occupies a picturesque setting on the crown of the hill, and is named after the leader of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The photograph shows what remained after the pub was badly damaged by Second World War bombing. The brick building on the left remains in situ, but the remainder was rebuilt to the designs of Raymond Erith in 1964, on a giant scale, in a weather-boarded Gothic style. The obelisk has now been removed to a safer position at the roadside. Behind the fence on the extreme right is Heath House, an attractive building of the later 18th century.
