Kingsbury In The 1950's

A Memory of Kingsbury.

I'm 70 now and still have great memories of Kingsbury where i lived from 1950 until 1960 with my parents Dick & Joyce and brother & sister Steve and Lynda. We lived in a Prefab just 5 doors down from Kingsbury swimming pool and hence spent hours there on our annual season tickets. (10 b0b} Idylic days playing football in the winter and cricket in the summer all just through the back fence in the park behind. There were loads of kids living there and we all knew everybody, all pals in our own football team " The Kingsbury Swifts " We were bloody good as well. I always wore the Arsenal kit and Glenn Carroll a man united one but on match days we were all white except Glenn the goalie. Pals that i remember but have'nt seen for 50+ years are Chris Cole ,Dave Cole,Colin Cole, Eric Brown ,Paul Mellor, Aniaran Brayley, Brian Davis, Alan & Ken Hawker, Andrew Lock, Robert Black, David Learmouth , Brian Saunders and many many more. I'm still in touch with Gill Moody (Blackie now) who was my wife Cathy's best friend. many more . JO JO whalley who could fight better than the boys!!!
The high Road with a bombed out Woolworths and the bomb crater by kingsbury circle that we used to ride bikes in. The CO-OP , Charles Phillips, , shops where everybody knew your name and who you belonged to. My dad had a little bird everywhere telling what i was up to. Mr Winch (winchy) The head park keeper was always chasing after us for being where we should'nt.
IT WAS A WONDERFUL PERIOD IN LIFE. Just after the war and getting better everyday.
School was Roe Green Primary, wonderful, loved every minute then onto Kingsbury County Grammar that i hated. The Prefabs were Demolished in 1959 so we moved to Kenton Nr Preston Road. but still kept going back to Kingsbury for Teenage play. The Ritz Ballroom, the Greatest place in the world with a Buddy Holly and the Cickets Look and sound alike. PAUL RENO and The ??? Poss searchers.
Great memories that i would never trade for others.

Great Post Barry... enjoyed reading it, thank you! I moved into Chris Coles house in Elthorne Way...... finally buying it.... long story, with much sadness. Did you know Chris's younger brother Lee (could have been Liegh?). Anyway Barry all best.... more memories please! Geoff Shwalbe
