First of many visits to Lichfield which led to my affection with this city, that my fther had spent time in during his RAF days at Lichfield Drome in 1942. Many friends and contacts were made here.

A lovely place! There are many changes now in 2006.

RE: RE: Friends in Lichfield

For John Yardley

Fascinating to hear that your Dad served at RAF Lichfield during WW2. I believe the base had both RAF and Canadian crews based there. We lived in a long, wooden hut of WW2 origin, but inside it was spacious and warm in the winter. We were located opposite the officers' mess and very close to the firing range. My brother and I got into big trouble because of the range. First when we were watching a live firing practice. The guy in charged yelled at us to leave and reported us to my father - with painfull backsides being the outcome. On another occasion, we collected spent .303 bullets and fixed them into the brass cartridges so that they looked like live ammo. When my father found what he thought were about 100 live bullets under are beds he went really ape, until our neighbour told him that you could see the indentions made on the back of the cartridge cases made by the firing pin. Those were the days!
Regards, Andrew.
