Merrow Village Hall

A Memory of Merrow.

Where local people were invited to watch the film of Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953. There wasn't a screen, just curtains which moved about a bit. The Hall was used for the Tenant's Association's children's Christmas parties and we all sported paper 'crowns' donated by Cow and Gate - I've still got my picture!

The 'clinic' was held here once a week where mothers could meet each other and get information about their children's health and well-being and babies could be weighed. More important to the children was the chance to taste the 'clinic orange juice'.

The Hall was also used for jumble (or rummage) sales, a great way to find a new outfit; I remember getting there before the doors opened to get first go at the jumble, and the excitement at finding something that might fit and would be fine once it was washed!

Saturdays used to be exciting with the weekly housey housey or bingo sessions. We all took our own pencils and it was quite something if you had more than one card to play. Tea and biscuits were sold at half time. My dad used to be 'the caller' and I used to help him by holding the bag with numbers in and passing them to him, a very important job. It was very much a family things with ages ranging from 10 to 80 and lots of good natured banter.
