Gloucester Grove

A Memory of Peckham.

My name is Jan and I was born in Cronin Road in 1952. My Great granny Payne had a shop there, a drapers I think, although she died before I was born. We moved to Camberwell and then to Gloucester Grove when I was three and lived there until the council decided to destroy a community in the name of progress. Streets of neat Victorian terraces and our lovely tall terraced houses, right opposite the school, with iron railings and steps to the front door, all gone. I was 16 when they moved us to Downham, I hated the place, after our house in Gloucester Grove they seemed such pokey little houses all the same. I have tried to find a photo of our houses in Gloucester Grove but no luck, maybe someone can help. My best friend was Eileen Lomas, whose Dad worked for a corn merchant I think, but they moved away, later I met a red haired girl named Jean Muggeridge who moved in round the corner, she went to Peckham Girls School but we lost touch after we were rehoused.
Peckham Rye was great with the Lido and plenty of places to have fun and explore, I used to go there with my cousin and our dogs. He lived in Furley Road off of Peckham Hill Street. When I left Gloucester Grove Junior I went to St Saviours and St Olaves in the New Kent Road.
Rye Lane was a brilliant shopping centre and I loved Jones and Higgins at Christmas especially the year Cinderella was the theme. My cousin had a Saturday job in the shop and met his wife there. I loved Peckham and felt lucky to live in such a great place, I had a great childhood there.

Hi I'm Jeanette, I lived in East Surrey Grove Peckham, next to Cronin Road, I went to Peckham Girls School from 1961 to 1966.
We lived in East Surrey Grove until the council moved everyone out so they could demolish all those nice houses.
Hi I'm Jan, I loved where we lived and it was criminal demolishing such lovely houses. Where were you moved to? I eventually ended up in Bexley when I married but still think of Gloucester Grove where I had such a happy childhood.
HI Jan
We were moved to a house in Blackheath. When I got married we lived in Streatham, after 10 years we moved to the Isle of Sheppey, we lived on Sheppey for 19 years, we now live in Broadstairs Kent.

Hi Jan,
I lived at Gloucester Grove number 7, until they moved us out because of a compulsory purchase order. When I think now, it was theft. I lived with my parents and brother in my grandmother's house that she paid for. She received peanuts for the house, and we were moved to Southampton Way Estate, and she had to PAY for us to have a maisonette there. I remember Gloucester Grove as a wide long road, and I too attended the school at the end.
Hi Jan,
I was born in East Surrey Grove in 1952 and lived there until 1963. I went to Gloucester Grove Primary between 1957 and 1963. The houses were lovely and big but our roof leaked like a sieve and I remember having to scrape ice from the inside of the bedroom window. My older sister (Sue) went to Gloucester Grove and Peckham Girl's School.
They moved us from East Surrey to a new house off of Rye Lane.

Hi Jan
I was born at 85 east surery grove in 1953 and my nan had a house just by the flats.
Does anybody remember ragland place just halfway down the street it had a great sweet shop.
We were moved out to Downham, no choice in the matter. It's probably a nice but I hated it. Miles away from where I was born and brought up. We lived in one of the terraced houses opposite the school with large rooms and high ceilings so the small place we were moved to felt claustrophobic. I have no wish to insult residents of Downham but that's how I felt. I left Gloucester Grove school and went to St Saviour's and St Olave's in the New Kent Road. I only ever went back once and saw the horrendous estate they had replaced all our lovely houses with, I left in tears, criminal destruction but that's " progress".

Hi, I was born at 95 East Surrey Grove in 1953 and went to Gloucester Grove School until 1960, when I moved away to Herne Hill.
Some of your names here seem familiar, and based on the dates, we must have played street games together.
I remember Harry’s ice cream store on the corner, and Alf’s pokey candy store; the steaming Laundry; fetching the fish-and-chips dinner from Ragland Place; and catching rats by hand on the bombsite.
Fond memories.
My Mum used to send me round to get fish and chips every week and I always used to ask for some "crackles", all the little bits of batter, my treat for going!
I grew up in cronin rd lived no 52 remember dawn and susan wood pamala templeman Josephine and Margaret McNally would like to hear from them iris
I was born and lived at 102 Cronin Road. This was my grandad and grandmothers house. Their name was Wisdom. We had other family at 55 and another I can't remember and in Tilson Road. I went to Gloucester grove school. My best friend was Edward McNally. Many happy memories of Stones shop , the fish and chip shop and standing outside Durham and Lord Raglan pubs. We got moved to the Woodene Estate. That's gone now as well. Worked at Samuel Jones with my Cousin Tony Wisdom. Also seemed to spend all my time at the Bradfield boys club. Went back last year. . I have also been trying to find any photos of Cronin Road. Be great to hear from anybody who may have some or know here to see any. Steve Albon.
Peter I think that we might have been in the same class with teachers like Miss Tasker, Mrs Fitzgerald, Mrs Platt and lovely Mr Stock. Do you remeber any classmates names?
John Brinnand sorry that I didn't get back to you but have been told that Eileen has lived in the US for a long time. I hope that she has had a happy and fulfilling life.

There was a boy in my class called Michael McAvoy, probably the brother of your friend Minnie.
My name was Linda Prested and I lived in the flats in East Surrey Grove, nearest to Raglan Passage, where there was a bomb site. Some of the surnames mentioned here are familiar and also many of the places - particularly the ice cream shop, Stone's and the fish and chip shop next door. Our washing was sent to "the bag wash" in the laundry in East Surrey Grove.

I went to Gloucester Grove School when Mr Fletcher was Headmaster and my form teacher was Mr Stock. I think I sat next to Brian Northern, cousin to Alan Lancaster, who later became part of "Status Quo". I remember music being played in School Assembly (Peter and the Wolf?), being in the choir where somebody rang hand bells and being told to look straight ahead at the clock in the hall when we sang. In our last year at school we went on a School Journey to the Isle of Wight, something we still do as we live on the south coast.

My Dad, his brothers and sister also went to Gloucester Grove School; they grew up in Cronin Road and the boys went to The Bradfield Club. My Aunt worked in the dry cleaners in St George's Way and her husband worked for Samuel Jones.

I remember Saturday morning pictures at The Odeon in Peckham Road, having pie and mash in Peckham Hill Street and a group of us would walk or bike to Peckham Rye or Brunswick Park. Collecting old newspapers would give us a few pennies each when we had them weighed in East Surrey Grove. We enjoyed shopping in Rye Lane and the market and I had a Saturday job in Jones and Higgins when I was older.

I attended Peckham Girls' School where the teaching was amazing and where we could learn to play the piano, bake, try our hand at pottery, woodwork, dress making and play tennis. I recall the school singing "The Messiah". The Head Teacher was Miss Smart and I was in Miss Morley's class. Having moved to Herne Hill by then, I took the bus to school. Equipped with my shorthand and typing skills, taught by Mrs Stern, I was able to move to an interesting job in the West End where I stayed for many years.

As with so many of the other comments, I have only happy memories of living in Peckham.
You can take the girl out of Peckham but you can't take Peckham out of the girl.
Hi Linda, I don't think that we knew each other but I was in the same class as John Prested, is he your brother?
My name is Andre Ruan and I attended Gloucester Grove Primary School from 1964 until 1968 when we moved to Forest Hill. I remember Miss Yeoman as a teacher. We lived at 165 Gloucester Grove, the end terraced 3 storey house on the corner.
Hi Sylvia, I was at the school around the years 1959/60. I used to live with my mother in Wells Way. We moved from there to Surrey Road around 1960. I have one photo taken at a Nativity Play. I'm pretty sure I was 5 at the time and I'm one of the Three Kings! I was too young to remember the names of anybody else who was on stage at the time, except from the McLeod brothers. Rory McLeod is now a well known song writer/performer. In the photo, he is one of the angels! The only other person I remember from the school is Michael Brown, who was also at Ivydale Road Primary School at the same time as I was.
hi Linda I lived at 13 East Surrey grove and went to Gloucester Grove school I was born in 1953 and my dad was somewhat of a celebrity as he was an ambulance man with london ambulance services and was known to all the neighbours who called him Jack Travers and I always remember so many times when or neighbours would knock on the door to ask if he could come over because a family member was not feeling well. The local docxtor was 2 brothers by the name of Devlin and I remember the head master being Mr Fletcher and our class teacher being Mr Reteif who was from s Africa and told us great stories from his country and taught us how to weave baskets, he was a very wise teacher and I still to this day pass on some of his words of wisdom.
We lived at 165 Gloucester Grove between 1960 and 1968. I attended Gloucester Grove school. I remember the Devlin Brothers who had a Doctor's surgery on St George's Way. I also remember the prefabricated bungalows opposite our house. We moved to Forest Hill in 1968 after a compulsory purchase order was served on the area.
are you from the Derriman family, I lived at No, 9 , until 1950, I remember Sylvia and Queenie, you had one of those pedal organs ??? I think you are in a photo in 1946, at Christopher and Nicholas house across the road (BIRDS). They always did a great bonfire night.
would Tina Rolfe , be a distant relative of mine, My Aunt Lill and Uncle Fred Rolfe, used to live not far from us , don't remember the streets name, but I know I walked past Gilberts fish shop, (we were in Gloucester Grove). I remember one Xmas taking my doll around to show my aunt, and dropped it on it's head!
