Lakemans Nursery Beulah Crescent.

A Memory of Thornton Heath.

I have been trying to find pictures of Lakemans Nursery before it was demolished back in the early 70's, preferably pictures from the early - late 60's as I have fond memories visiting the place as a kid between those times. I have posted requests on a couple of Facebook sites that relate to Thornton Heath connections and places, but to no avail. Also I'd like to find images of The Cabin at 2A Burlington Road, (the little paper/confectioners at the bottom of Burlington rd). I remember Mr Nicholas used to own it up until the early 70's, he lived a little further up Burlington rd on the same side. I hope someone can unearth some images of these places, it would be wonderful to see them again after all these years.

Dear Andyp

Your post re the nursery Beulah Crescent, got me thinking, as I have a memory of being taken there by my Mother when I was perhaps about four in the early fifties. I lived in Northwood Road and like you I never found any reference or pictures of the place. Until today! I found a website called Thornton Heath Chronical and someone called Robert Methven has posted a postcard entitled Cucumber House, all be it in the 1880's but it clearly shows a round area, and I always remember the nusery being round and in the middle of some roads. Robert has posted more Thornton Heath stuff on facebook , which could be interesting. Hope this helps. Maggie Brooker
Hi Maggie.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, and providing some further information regards Lakeman's nursery on Beulah Crescent, I went to the site and saw the pictures you referred to, very interesting. It would be super if someone has some pictures of the nursery in the 60's or up to just prior to it's demolition in the early 70's. I remember going to collect coal from there in the early 60's, in an old pushchair, also frog spawn from an old butler type sink they had on the floor in one of the greenhouses, (1d) penny a jarful. Happy days. Regards. Andy Piner
