Alma St

A Memory of Collyhurst.

I was born in No 27 Alma St in September 1944 My Father’s name was Thomas and my mother’s name was Sarah. I went to St Malachys, I left December 1959. I remember the paper mill at the bottom of the street, down by the river Irk. My Nan lived at No 6 Beacher St. The families I remember were the Smiths, Jones, Hatton, and Malone’s there dad was the manager of the Astor Picture House. Also my mate Jeff Materson, who was going into the army with me but backed out at the last minute, they moved out to Irlam near the Petro Chemical Plant.

I am Christine Morris. I was born in 1954 as Christine Veldon at 19 Alma Street and lived there till about 1962 when we moved to Blackley. I went to st malachys school. I remember playing with Hatton family Janice? and Katy and Joe Mitchell who lived next door. I remember crossing the Croft to the newsagents on Topley St.
We lived directly across from the Hattons, the Norman family at no. 13 plus grannie lived at no.2. I always thought the Hattons were “dead posh” as they had a car. I remember the dad drove me to hospital when I had an accident in Queens Park by falling off the rocking horse. We were 4 sister, Susan, Angela, Shirley (me) and Linda. Plus big brother Joe who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident aged 17, just after we all moved to Blackley. I live in Australia, the rest of the sisters still live in the north of England.
Jean Pickett I remember you. I was Shirley Norman from number 13. I think you were at the Tin School at the same time as me.
