Ingleby Court ,Harrow On The Hill.

A Memory of Harrow on the Hill.

This half burnt out mansion and wonderful Japanese garden holds very special memories for me.Although it had notices saying it was private and to keep out,not to mention trespassers would be prosecuted,I couldn't keep away and would go there every chance I got.Despite the obvious dangers,I would make my way up to the roof and sit up there for hours listening to my tranny. It never really bothered me that the house wasn't safe to mess around in.What a place to sit and daydream,I loved that house so much,I was heartbroken when it was demolished.

So glad that you remember the old mansion - I am wondering if it's the same place that I remember. I have wonderful memories of living in Harrow and of messing around in the mansion (even though it was dangerous, we had no fear) there with a friend. There were wall paintings and cherubs, if I remember correctly. It's a wonderful memory to have. If I remember correctly it was near the end of a road almost at the bottom of the hill. And I too, loved that house.
Am sure it must be the same place.I have friends who are trying to trace anyone who remembers it and may even have taken photos of it.Would love to see it again.
I have been looking at some of my old photos recently and came across some from Ingleby Court, which I had written down as Montrose House. I called it the Japanese House.
I used to often go there on my scooter at lunchtimes and weekends, circa 1963/4, and like you enjoyed so much this ruined, falling apart space, the charred timbered open rafters. And the fabulous overgrown garden with huge boulders, Japanese stone lanterns and exotic palm trees.
As you may know it is now a neo-Georgian group of houses. I checked it out a few days ago and there is just one large rock left from the old house on one of the front lawns.
The photos from Ingleby Court are all close details: bits of broken windows and pitted walls etc. Happy days indeed.
Hello Frank.Pleased to see your comment. You are so lucky to have pictures of Ingleby Court,we called it the Jinx in those days.We too have gone back to the site many times and relived those memories.Do you still live in the area? I never took my camera with me when I used to mess about up there, and have regretted it ever since it was demolished.Would love to see your pictures, maybe you could email me at barbiecoles@gmail.com if you'd like to make an old girl very happy,ha ha! We took photos of the large rock you mention outside number 11 Ingleby Drive. Some fellow followers have a facebook page if you'd like to join us.Happy days they certainly were!
I like you have tried to find photos of this house, me and my sister spent many summer holidays messing about there, we also called it the Jinx, and the Chinese Embassy? I was looking on YouTube and there is a newspaper with a report of it being burnt, and one of it being built.
Hello Barbara.Lovely to hear your memory.Tried to find Ingleby on You Tube but no joy.Perhaps you could let me know how you found it or what you typed in.
I lived with my family at number one Ingleby Drivefrom the tail end of 1971 when it was turned into 11 neo Georgian houses, some with Swimming pools. This was part of a few developments at the time in the location, the other being Georgian Way.
As for Ingleby Drive many of the stones existed in various back gardens, including our own, whilst in a portion of the front garden a smaller stone existed. At the time of construction a lot of the garden areas were kept open at the request of the developer. The house remained owned by my parents, where they lived on their own after my two elder brothers and myself moved out until 2014! As children my elder brother and I unearthed a small portion of the base of the gate post that formed part of the original entrance to the old mansion.
When we moved there I was six years old, and this still substantial five bed detached house with what to me seemed like enormous gardens, seemed absolutely huge.
I left home, as the youngest the last one to do so in 1999, shortly before getting married, and I still live virtually on the door step. At my current age of 57 I have a huge number of memories growing up there, and like everyone says, it seemed like better times!
