One Of The Boys

A Memory of Hounslow.

On a Sunday a crowd of boys and girls would meet at the Sky High milk bar at the Bell end of the High Street. After a few milk shakes we would then go to the pictures, either the Regal or the Alcaza and sometimes go to the other end of the town to the Dominion. Another cinema was the privately owned one called the Empire, locally known as 'the bug hutch'. There was a clothes shop called Rego's and just after the war they were selling t-shirts, but they were then called 'sloppy Joes', at 2/6d each. I have fond memories of Hounslow as I was born and bred there and lived there for 35 years. I went to Hounslow Town school, infants and juniors then to Bullstrode School until I was 14 then went into the printing trade. I now live in High Wycombe but nothing will ever replace Hounslow, it holds so many good memories before, during and after the war. I would like to get in touch with anyone who live in Hounslow between 1938 to 1958, perhaps we could share some memories.

Do you rember the dance hall over Burtons at the bell
I remember Rego's the tailors, I fell through the front plate glass window one Autumn, I was beasted by the staff who let me off because they had reported me to the schools do they thought that was trouble enough, I was at Bulstrode school at the time. Next morning at assembly Mr Dennis (who it was rumoured, was thrown out of the Gestapo for cruelty) had me out in front of everyone saying I wasn't to be caned because I had to pay for the window! At last the system had spared me.
What a nice chap Mr Dennis was

I was a Bulstrode from 1960 - 1964. I was one of the two boys caned in front if the whole school. We were caught scrumping grapes from the doctors surgery conservatory in Lampton Road it was an empty property up for redevelopment. We had our school blazers on and caught picked out next day. It was me Terry Walker from Corporation Avenue/Hounslow Heath. The other boy was either Peter Clark ir Harry Davis. I was in the C stream all the way through.
Hi Terry Walker, this is Harry Davis who was with you when we got caned by Mr Dennis for stealing the grapes, Peter Clark was with us that morning but carried on walking to school and we got caught, hope life has treated you well. All the best Harry

Pleased to hear from you if you were in Hounslow area at that time !
I was at Bustrode Boys between 60 and 64 and remember Mr Dennis (headmaster) caning two boys in front of the assembled school one morning. There were other boys given a similar treatment and one I recall was the caning of a boy who had tampered with another's push bike causing him to have an accident. Securing nuts for the front wheel had been loosened! Rossi's, for their ice cream, was a favourite after school hangout.
