West Kilburn

A Memory of Kilburn.

I was born in Kilburn Park Road. My father was a fireman on the old London North Eastern Railway. My grandparents lived nmext door. My mother was of Irish descent. My first school was Essendine Road whic was just up the road. Our house backed onto Paddington Recreation Ground. My father was om the Supplementary Reserve of the Royal Engineers Railway Operating Company. In 1940 when I was 10 years old the school was evacuated to Penryn Cornwall. Kilburn Park Road was like a village. Everybody new everybody. We came back from Cornwall in1942 and lived in Saltram Crescent which was considered posher. My best friends were Frank Clancy and George Cross we were in the Air Cadets together

Dennis, you may remember by brother, Dave Smith. We lived at Kilburn House, Malvern Place and Dave was friends with Bob Cross (George's brother?) and a group which included Tony Clements and Brian Peters who also lived in Saltram Cres. or thereabouts. Unfortunately Dave was killed in a motorbike accident not long after he completed his NS in the RAF (1956-58). He was also in the Air Cadets.
I was in between the previous two comments as I lived in Bayswater off Queensway until evacuated to Berkshire. After the war I lived in Elgin Avenue, near Chichester Road and went to Essendine Rd School until I ran away back to Berkshire in 1946. I came back again in 1951 and worked at Peter Keevils in Edgeware Rd. Watched Reg Harris racing his bike and also Macdonald Baily running at Paddington Rec. Roger Stanley
